ABOUT AMBOX

Ambox was originally created in Moscow by Sergei Ryzhkov, an inventor and co-founder of the internet provider RiNet. His idea was to create a musical player that would not depend on conventional power sources. One day, Sergey Korsakov, the Tyran of Cardboardia, saw him in a park playing what looked like a strange hurdy-gurdy and introduced the idea to English musician Stephen Coates. Stephen immediately suggested recording special music for the instrument and came up with the name "Ambox" — An Alchemical Music Box.
Together, they developed the idea further. Thus, around May 2016, Ambox was born: on the outside, a classic wooden barrel organ; on the inside, a clever electromechanical device that transforms the energy generated by turning the handle into music stored on an SD memory card. Ambox can play up to 99 tracks, while the memory card can be changed at any time to introduce new music.
Since its beginnings in Moscow, the project has evolved and expanded internationally. Today, Amboxes are made and assembled in the UK and France, where the project continues its development and production.
There are already different versions of the digital barrel organ — including transparent and illuminated models, as well as unique versions designed by artists. Musicians create special compositions for the instrument, and there is a synchronized model for playing as an "Ambox Orchestra", as well as a version for left-handed players.
Development continues in the UK and France, with ongoing research focused on improving the electronics of the instrument and exploring entirely new devices, including a video version capable of projecting images onto different surfaces.

It was a challenge to organise our small-scale production, and an even bigger challenge to manage the logistics of selling worldwide. It took us more than a year to learn how to receive international payments officially and navigate VAT, customs and shipping requirements across different countries. Since then, Ambox has grown from a small project born in Russia into an international one, with production now established in the UK and France.
We were among the pioneers of small independent businesses in Russia developing and producing a unique craft product for an international audience. Today, Amboxes are made and assembled in the UK and France and distributed worldwide. Perhaps we are also among the first to create a product that markets itself through personal contact and experience. We hope we will not be the only ones — and we are always happy to share what we have learned along the way.
